The Assembly film
The chassis (840 kg) is assembled in a workshop adjacent to the factory. The cross pieces are installed at a distance of 60 cm supported on the two central beams, guaranteeing uniform distribution of the weight of the holiday home (for Emeraude = 4900 kg). It is also fitted with a double axle. The entire chassis is made of galvanized steel.

The holiday home is a product that is delivered finished and fully furnished. Consequently, special care is taken with manufacturing, for all aspects from the work done by craftsmen to the industrial organization. The example considers construction of an Emeraude, the largest model made by IRM, the leading French manufacturer.

The IRM company is located in Vendée and in 2002 took over a former industrial site located in Lesquin in the Nord department. This is the company's fourth factory, and its main function is to manufacture the largest residential model in the range, the Emeraude (11 x 4 m). The Emeraude is a genuine small house with its four-slope roof , and special care is taken with it: thus production takes twice as long for this residential model as for a rental home. The Emeraude has forty different furniture elements, compared with seventeen for a standard model intended for rental: the insulation is also reinforced and assembly of the four-slope roof is more complex.
The Lesquin factory produces five Emeraude holiday homes, or eight Rubis type residential versions or ten holiday homes for rental, each day. The ninety workers in the factory work in different trades, including metallurgy, joinery, plumbing, electricity. There is no robotization in the holiday home industry, manual operations require experience and knowledge of the materials.

The assembly film

1 - The floor is composed of a Phaltex panel consisting of impregnated softwood fibers with 10% dry bitumen, and is covered with a linoleum covering on the inside. It is screwed onto the chassis. Drillings for plumbing and electricity are made at this stage, followed by the installation of wiring and pipework.

8 - Vinyl slats decorate the wall: they overlap each other and are stapled onto the previously marked wall battens. Stapling must leave a very small space between the wall and the slat, so that the plastic is free to expand under the effect of heat, or to contract under the effect of cold.
2 - At the same time, joiners assemble roof structure elements and walls. Workmen fill in the wall panels with polystyrene insulation (30 mm thick) between the battens.

9, 10 and 11 - The roof is prepared: waterproof foam joints and plastic film deposited before placement of the glass wool (100 mm thick) in rolls.

3 and 4 - The wall elements are then mounted onto the floor and screwed into place. Most furniture will have been already installed in the holiday home to facilitate handling. The roof is then placed on the body, by fixed elements. Connections and furniture attachment to the walls and floor are then made on the inside.

5 - Assembly of elements. The mirror making and some of the joinery are done by local subcontractors..

12 - The steel troughing roof is placed in several steps including screwing of waterproof facia strips, placement of tile plates and ridges.

6 and 7 - Emeraude homes have reinforced insulation: the "thermo bubble" sheet consisting of a bubble plastic sheet covered by an aluminum film is stapled onto the wall. The doors and windows are then installed , followed by the hinged shutters. For example, a living room window unit weighs 23 kg.

13 - The gutter is the last outside element put into place: angles are fixed around the periphery. In the inside, the final items of furniture such as tables, chairs, pouffes and sofas are installed and anchored for transport.
